According to The Boston Globe, Patriots wide receivers coach Brian Daboll will leave the Patriots coaching staff to join the Jets in the upcoming 2007 season. Daboll worked on the coaching staff of William and Mary College in 1997 and spent the 1998 and ’99 college seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Michigan State. He then made his NFL coaching debut with the Patriots in 2000, working as a defensive assistant during the ’00 and ’01 seasons. Over the last five seasons, Daboll made a name for himself as the Patriots wide receivers coach.

Was his contract up or is he moving up the coaching ranks?

this might help explain it some:
THE REAL DEAL ON DABOLL
There has been much confusion over the past few days regarding why and how the Jets were able to pilfer Pats assistant coach Brian Daboll, who most recently coached the team's receivers and previously was a defensive assistant.
Per a league source, Daboll wanted to be the quarterbacks coach, and head coach Bill Belichick declined the request.
Coincidentally, Daboll's contract was expired. And so he left.
from that small tidbit of info, it seems that BB made little attempt to keep Brian on board. seems like a small request to be upgraded to the open position of QB coach which apparently BB didn't think enough of Brian to promote him especially when we know BB favors keeping things in house. of course, QB coach is one of the main grooming spots for OC and maybe that is crux of it, given all the years of coaching together, perhaps BB does not think Brian will be OC material.
